Wear Orange Wednesday – WOW Day

Police

Go orange for NTES volunteers.

This Wednesday 12 November Territorians are being asked to say thank you to their local NT Emergency Service (NTES) volunteers for their hard work and dedication in providing help during cyclone, flood, storm and other emergencies.

Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) is a national day of recognition and appreciation for State and Territory Emergency Service (SES) volunteers. It calls on the community to express their gratitude to the 40,000 SES volunteers across the country by wearing orange, which is the official colour of all State Emergency Services.

Director NT Emergency Service, Andrew Warton said by wearing orange for WOW Day you are showing support for NTES volunteers across the Northern Territory.

“We have over 300 volunteers in the Territory operating from over 30 regional units. WOW Day gives the community an opportunity to say thank you for the contribution NTES volunteers make to the safety of their local communities.

“Our volunteers play a vital role in the event of an emergency. Recent examples involve rescuing an injured hiker in the West MacDonnell ranges, supplementing a Police operation in the search for a missing child and helping and preparing for the current tropical cyclone season.

“These skilled and compassionate men and women carry out their varied emergency response and rescue roles fuelled by a desire to assist the community and those in need.

“WOW Day is a day with a clear focus – wear orange to support NTES volunteers. The day is a means of thanking volunteers and recognising their achievements.”

The Northern Territory Emergency Service will participate in this year’s event through a small public display in Raintree Park between 11:30am–2:00pm and at the Todd River in Alice Springs behind the Senior Citizens Club from 12:30pm.

This is the first year WOW Day will be recognised and celebrated in Darwin and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
