Kava Seized - Ramingining

Two men, both aged 24, have been charged following a kava seizure south of Ramingining yesterday morning.

Remote Sergeant Ben Shultz said Police apprehended a Ford Courier at around 10:45am and conducted a search of the vehicle.

“Police seized two suitcases containing 40 kilograms of kava. Police estimate the value of kava could have fetched between $60,000 and $80,000, if sold in remote communities.”

The men were charged with possess and supply a commercial quantity of kava.

They will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 1 April.

“Police will continue to target people who bring kava into remote communities, Remote Sergeant Shultz said.

“Anyone with information on the transportation and sale of kava in the Northern Territory is urged to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
