Tropical Cyclone Nathan - Update#21 - Evacuation of Goulburn Island

Police

A State of Emergency has been declared for Goulburn Island as residents are evacuated ahead of the cyclone’s arrival, currently predicted for Tuesday morning.

The emergency evacuation centre is being managed by the Red Cross with support from the NT Government agencies, St Vincent de Paul, and local businesses.

Director NT Emergency Services Andrew Warton said that that 395 people had already been transferred from Warruwi as at 2:00pm, there are 29 people still to be evacuated.

“Evacuation of Warruwi is underway with residents to be temporarily accommodated at the Foskey Pavilion at Darwin Showgrounds,” said Mr Warton.

“Coordinating the evacuation and accommodation of more than 400 people in a short space of time is not an easy feat, and we thank all the staff and volunteers across the various agencies for their responsiveness and hard work.”

Evacuees will arrive at the Aviation Institute prior to being transferred to the Foskey Pavilion at the Darwin Showgrounds.
