Fatal Shooting - Darwin

Detectives from the Major Crime Squad are investigating the shooting death of a 25-year-old male in Wagaman in the early hours of this morning.

Detective Acting Superintendent Lee Morgan said reports of a gunshot and vehicle crash were reported to Police at 2.35am.

“Police attended the scene and discovered a gold coloured Toyota Camry had collided with a fence on Lee Point Road.  The driver of the vehicle had suffered a fatal gunshot wound prior to the crash.

“Detectives are currently on the scene conducting inquiries into circumstances surrounding the incident.

“A man who was a passenger in the vehicle is currently assisting Police with their investigations.

“At this stage Police believe a second vehicle may have been involved and we are currently seeking information from the public in regard to this vehicle.

“Police are requesting anyone who may have witnessed a possible altercation on Union Terrace or who has any information on this incident to contact them on 131 444 or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Detective Acting Superintendent Morgan said Police believe it is unlikely the shooting was a random act.

“The offender remains outstanding and it is possible he or she is still armed which poses a risk to the community.

”Police are urging the offender to phone Police and arrange a safe surrender.  In the interest of ensuring everybody’s safety this matter needs to be resolved quickly.”

“Members of the public are asked to remain vigilant and report any incidents involving firearms to police immediately on 000.”

A crime scene will remain in place on Union Terrace in Anula and Lee Point Road in Wagaman until further notice.
