Cannabis Seized - Katherine

Late yesterday afternoon Northern Territory Police were informed of a possible abduction and extortion of a male from Mataranka.

Commander Tony Fuller said it is alleged that a 29-year-old male attended a premises in Mataranka yesterday morning and threatened a 22-year-old man into his vehicle.

“Police will allege that he then drove his victim to Katherine where the victim was forced to withdraw $40,000 in cash, before abandoning him at a Katherine service station.

“Later that evening, Police attended a Katherine hotel and arrested the offender. Upon search of his room, Police located 5.5 kilograms of cannabis and $39,650 in cash.”

He was charged with:

  • Demand with menaces for benefit
  • Possess cannabis commercial quantity
  • Supply cannabis commercial quantity
  • Assault
  • Deprivation of liberty

He will appear in Katherine Magistrates Court on Monday.

“Police would like to thank the members of the public in Katherine who assisted Police. Their assistance was invaluable in safely locating the victim and the offender,” said Commander Fuller.
