Man Charged - Kava Seized - Darwin

Northern Territory Police have charged a 31-year-old man following a large kava seizure yesterday.

Detective Acting Superintendent Clint Sims from the Drug and Organised Crime Division said just before midday Police pulled over a white Toyota Hilux south of the Adelaide River Township.

“Upon searching the vehicle, Police located four suitcases containing a total of 100 kilograms of Kava. The driver was arrested and conveyed to Darwin Watch House for questioning.

“Later that day Police conducted a search warrant at a Pinelands storage shed allegedly used by the man, a further 110 kilograms of kava was located.

“The Toyota Hilux has also been seized by Police.”

He was charged with possessing and supplying a commercial quantity of kava.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court today.

“Police will allege that this seizure was destined for remote communities, where it could fetch up to $210,000.” said Detective Acting Superintendent Sims.
