Social Media Hoax

Police

In a joint operation with the Australian Federal Police, Northern Territory Police have identified a 15-year-old male in relation to a social media hoax threatening a Darwin school.

The post appeared on a Darwin group page and was quickly reported to authorities. The post and the account were subsequently deleted.

“A number of users of the Facebook page felt directly threatened and reported the post to the Northern Territory Police and the National Security Hotline,” Commander Michael Murphy said.

Police executed a search warrant at a residence in suburban Darwin and seized a number of items for examination.

“The public can be reassured that there is no imminent threat to any school in the Darwin region relating to this incident,” said Commander Murphy. “I would also like to extend my thanks to the Department of Education for their professional and cooperative response to the investigation.”

“Police take this type of incident very seriously and will continue to work with national law enforcement and intelligence agencies to act quickly, identify those responsible to ensure the safety of all Territorians.”

The investigation is continuing and the youth is yet to be charged with any offences.

“I thank the public for their quick response and continue to encourage members of the public to report any suspicious activity to the National Security Hotline on 1800123400.”

Due to ongoing investigations, no further police comment will be provided.
