Northern Territory Police are assisting investigators from South Australia Police in relation to the interstate discovery of the remains of deceased Alice Springs mother and daughter, Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce Kiara-Pearce.
Assistant Commissioner Jamie Chalker has issued the following statement:
“It is known that Karlie’s mother raised a missing persons report on 4 September 2009 in Alice Springs and normal initial investigation inquiries at that time indicated signs of active life. It was understood that Karlie had travelled interstate with her daughter and that family contact had been intermittent. The investigation was subsequently filed on 10 September 2009 after Karlie’s mum withdrew her concern as she advised that she had received contact from Karlie, that she was safe and well, and did not want further contact. There were no adverse elements within the investigation to counter the belief of Karlie’s mum at that time. Sadly, she herself has passed away since then and it is understood her remaining family believed Karlie was still alive albeit estranged.
“South Australian Police have met with relatives in the NT to advise the status of the investigation and identification of their family members. The family has made a statement requesting privacy at this time.
“The investigation is being led jointly by New South Wales and South Australia Police and is active. The Northern Territory Police will continue to assist and support these investigations wherever possible. All queries however relating to the current investigation need to be directed to the lead agencies as is normal protocol.
“Members of the public that believe they may have information to assist in the current investigation into the disappearance of Karlie and Khandalyce are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The smallest piece of information can be vital to identifying those responsible for these crimes.”
