Northern Territory Police have laid charges for a variety of offences after seizing a vessel which was used to carry a load of liquor to Melville Island yesterday.
Superintendent Daniel Shean said that the vessel was intercepted after receiving information of its illicit cargo.
“Police seized 330 cans of beer, three 1-litre bottles of rum and one 1-litre bottle of vodka.”
A Toyota Landcruiser and a 6-metre vessel were seized under the Liquor Act. The Act restricts alcohol from being taken into certain places (General Restricted Areas) as a measure to reduce alcohol related harm in the community.
“Police take seriously any breaches of the Liquor Act and will take appropriate action such as these arrests and seizures, to reduce alcohol related harm and promote a safe community.”
One male was issued a Liquor Infringement Notice and bailed to appear at Pularumpi Court of Summary Jurisdiction (CSJ) on 21 January 2016 for unrelated offences. Two other males were issued Liquor Infringement Notices relevant to the offending and:
A 34-year-old male was charged with:
- Bring Liquor into a restricted area
- Possess Liquor in a restricted area
- Transport liquor in a restricted area
- Supply liquor in a restricted area.
A 41-year-old male was charged with:
- Bring Liquor into a restricted area
- Possess Liquor in a restricted area
- Transport liquor in a restricted area
- Supply liquor in a restricted area
- Drive under the influence of alcohol
- Drive unregistered motor vehicle
- Drive uninsured motor vehicle
- Tow unregistered trailer
- Put to sea without appropriate safety gear x 3.
The offenders were bailed to appear Pularumpi CSJ on 21 January 2016.
