The Cross Border Team recently conducted four days of operations targeting alcohol and Illicit substances destined for remote Aboriginal communities.
NT Police joined with Queensland Police to set up rolling road blocks between Tuesday 27 and Friday 30 October in the Barkly region and Camooweal in Queensland.
NT Drug Detector Dogs Wilson and Quella were used for all operations with success at each activity.
Cross Border Team Detectives achieved the following significant results:
- Approximately 50 litres of alcohol and a small amount of cannabis were seized during road block operations
- Cannabis was seized following search warrants executed upon two premises in Tennant Creek
- A 270 high powered rifle and 148 grams of cannabis were located and seized during a joint search warrant operation upon two residences in Camooweal
Detective Sergeant Andrew Bedwell said that Police were able to seize a substantial amount of alcohol, cannabis and a firearm, which was on its way to remote NT communities and charged several offenders in relation to these crimes.
“Approximately 45 vehicles and drivers were subject to random breath testing and licence checks as part of this operation.
“The high powered rifle was reported missing from Katherine some time ago. NT and Queensland detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that lead to this firearm being located in a remote Queensland town. A 57-year-old male is to be summonsed in Queensland for unlawfully being in possession of the firearm.
“This is another example of the Cross Border Team working in partnership with interstate Police to reduce harm caused by illicit substances in remote communities.
“The Cross Border Team will continue reduce harm by targeting drug trafficking and criminal networks involved in the supply of illicit substances and alcohol to remote communities,” Detective Sergeant Bedwell said.
