Northern Territory Police have intensified their search for a prisoner who is reported to have absconded from the Correctional Services work camp in Nhulunbuy overnight.

Edward (Eddie) James Horrell, aged 62, is now the subject of an extensive Police operation involving members of the TRG, Metropolitan Patrol Group, Aboriginal Police Officers and local Police.

Acting Commander Michael Hebb said teams of Officers are conducting enquiries in Nhulunbuy, Ski/Wallaby Beach and Yirrkala. Road blocks have been established across the area, and local ‘bush taxi’ and aviation companies contacted in the effort to locate Horrell.

A/Commander Hebb said: “Police recognise the high level of concern within the community, and our aim is to quickly and safely take Horrell back into custody.

“We are indebted for the valuable assistance provided so far by local people in locating Horrell, and urge the public to report any sightings of immediately.

“We are continuing to speak to known associates and family members of Horrell, and suspect he has attempted to obtain assistance to travel to an outstation in the region.”

Horrell has a number of convictions for violent offences including rape, manslaughter and murder.

If sighted members of the public are urged not to approach him and to contact police immediately.
