A 14-year-old male has been charged over a vehicle theft in Karama.
Police allege the male and three other youths attended a home on Pelham Court where they stole a white truck in the early hours of Monday 18 January.
The truck was unlocked and a set of spare keys was in the glovebox.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Bland from Strike Force Trident said Casuarina members came across the vehicle on Manunda Terrace and attempted a traffic apprehension.
“The vehicle failed to stop and Police engaged in a low-speed pursuit ending in Teal Court, Wulagi where the group ran from the car.”
All were apprehended after a short foot chase.
The 14-year-old – who was the driver – has been charged with:
- Stealing
- Unlawful use of a motor vehicle
- Drive unlicensed
- Fail to comply with Police directions
Detective Bland said it was a reminder for residents to not leave their cars unlocked with keys inside.
“Criminals are largely opportunistic, and leaving your cars unlocked with keys inside is a sure-fire way of becoming a theft statistic.”
The youth will appear in the Darwin Youth Justice Court on Friday 22 January.
