Flood Watch for North West Carpentaria, Coastal and Bonaparte Coastal Rivers

Police

A flood watch continues in the Northern Territory for North West, Carpentaria Coastal and Bonaparte Coastal River systems.

Commander Bruce Porter has advised that due to a current monsoonal flow, some areas are being affected with significant isolated falls. For the latest weather forecasts see www.bom.gov.au/nt/forecasts.

“River rises can be expected in these areas for the remainder of the week. Road access is being, and can be affected. Access to some communities and townships is likely to be affected and they may become isolated,” he said.

“The Bonaparte Coastal Rivers district, especially around the Victoria River area, including the Armstrong, Camfield, Townsend and Montejinni Rivers, has experienced some heavy rainfalls over the last couple of days.

“This has seen the river and creek systems react vigorously with rising levels and flooding of roadways. Currently both the Buntine and Buchanan Highways are closed and impassable.”

Road conditions and closures are monitored by the Department of Infrastructure and anyone who intends to travel is advised to check the road report through the SecureNT website www.securent.nt.gov.au before they set out, or call the road report information line on 1800 246 199.

Commander Porter urged drivers to carefully consider their options before trying to cross any flooded roadways.

“Trying to predict the water depth or not being able to see if the road is still intact could have fatal consequences,” he said.
