A large group of youths and a 25-year-old man have been arrested in relation to a crime spree On Groote Eylandt Monday morning (1 February 2016).

Arnhem and Western Division Superintendent John Atkin said up to 15 youths and the man allegedly caused several disturbances across the island between 4 and 6:00am.

“The group allegedly stole a car from Alyangula,” he said.

“They also attempted to break into several other homes and businesses, and attempted to steal more cars, but were unsuccessful.”

Superintendent Atkin said of this group, 11 youths aged between 13-17 were arrested. Six were charged and bailed, while five will receive youth diversion.

The 25-year-old was also charged and bailed.

They will appear in Alyangula Magistrates Court in March.
