The Northern Territory road toll has risen to six after the death of a 48-year-old man at Barunga overnight.

Early investigations suggest the car was travelling into the community when the vehicle left the road and crashed into a tree at about 1am.

Clinic staff attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was the only occupant in the car.

The road toll was four at the same time last year.
