House Fire - Palmerston

Police

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service attended a house fire in Palmerston after being contacted just after 11:00pm last night.

Crews responding from Berrimah and Palmerston stations found the carport of the property fully engulfed, with smoke and fire spreading to the house.

Three occupants of the residence managed to escape without injury.

Neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precaution and the road was blocked by Police to allow unrestricted access to emergency vehicles.

Acting Fire Watch Commander Jeffery Whittaker said Firefighters entered and completed a search of the house to confirm no further occupants were inside.

“Firefighters shortly after bought the blaze under control.

“Quick action by the crews contained the spread of the fire to the initial area.”

Early investigations suggest the fire started in the carport before spreading to a vehicle and then to the house.

“We understand smoke alarms and neighbours alerted the family to the fire and that the family had evacuation plans in place.

“We cannot stress enough how important this is.  A house can be replaced but lives cannot,” Fire Watch Commander Whittaker said.

Fire investigators have traced the cause of the fire to a faulty power board in the carport.
