Statement from Commissioner of Police

Police

Domestic and family violence is a disgrace that has to stop.

Today, with my fellow Police Commissioners across Australia and New Zealand, I have signed a Statement of Commitment that the Northern Territory Police Force will do everything it can to protect women, men and children from family violence and hold perpetrators to account.

We have all heard the sad and horrifying statistics.  In the Northern Territory, an Indigenous woman is almost 11 times more likely to be the victim of assault than a non-Indigenous woman. More than 60% of these assaults against Indigenous women are perpetrated by a partner or ex-partner.

The Northern Territory Police Force is a White Ribbon accredited organisation that does not tolerate domestic violence in any form.

Through programs such as White Ribbon and ‘No More’ we are making a real difference in raising awareness in the community and encouraging men to change their behaviour.  But, as a community we can do more.

As part of today’s launch, all Police Commissioners across Australia and New Zealand have agreed to a set of Policing Principles for Protecting Women and Children from Family Violence. I encourage you to have a look at these on our website.

Let’s work together to make sure that everyone in our community can feel safe.
