Traffic Charges - Katherine

Police

Police in Katherine arrested three people for drug-related offences overnight.

Superintendent Lauren Hill said that members from the Northern Traffic Operations pulled the offenders over within 90 minutes of each other.

“In the first incident, a 24-year-old female tested positive for cannabis while driving outbound on the Victoria Highway about 10:00pm,” she said.

“Police found three unrestrained children in the back seat of the vehicle, aged six weeks, 20 months and 10 months.”

A subsequent search of the vehicle located a quantity of cannabis.

The 24-year-old woman was fined $1940.10 for the unrestrained children, failing to produce a licence on request and possession of cannabis.

“There’s simply no excuse for driving with unrestrained children in the car,” Superintendent Hill said.

A 22-year-old female passenger was also fined $300.10 for possession of cannabis.

In a second incident at 11:30pm Police stopped a vehicle travelling inbound on the Stuart Highway north of Katherine.

“A 38-year-old male driver tested positive for methamphetamine and was arrested for a blood test,” Superintendent Hill said.

“He was disqualified from driving for 24 hours and served with a Notice to Appear in court to front a charge of driving with a prohibited drug in blood.”

Northern Traffic Operations members would like to remind the public that driving with a prohibited drug in your blood carries a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment.

“If you drink or use drugs, think twice before getting behind the wheel,” Superintendent Hill said.

“Police will continue to randomly test drivers for drugs and alcohol and it’s not a matter of if but when you’ll get caught.”
