Roadside Drug Testing

Police

Northern Territory Police are urging Territorians to think twice before getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle if you are taking prescription medicines.

Following the introduction of roadside drug testing kits, Detective Superintendent Janelle Tonkin from the Traffic Division said Police are now able to conduct drug testing for Methamphetamine, MDMA, Cannabis, Benzodiazepines and Opiates such as morphine, heroin and codeine at any time on the Territory’s roads.

“Even if you are using prescription medicines that are legal such as codeine, you need to be very aware of what you are taking and whether or not you are able to drive,” Detective Superintendent Tonkin said.

“Every driver has a responsibility to themselves and to other road users to ensure their ability behind the wheel isn’t impaired in any way.”

Some tips to follow:

  • If you are unsure about the side-effects or your ability to drive, check with your doctor
  • Always check the listed side-effects on the packaging
  • Follow the recommended dose
  • Don’t mix your medications without medical advice or use alcohol at the same time, and
  • Never take someone else’s medication.

“You may be charged if you are found driving with drugs in your system,” Detective Superintendent Tonkin said.
