Changes to the Misuse of Drug Act

Police

From today, new offences in the Misuse of Drugs Act for the Northern Territory will take effect, making it illegal to display or supply (including sell) drug paraphernalia.

These changes outlaw the sale of items including cocaine kits, water pipes commonly known as ‘bongs’, ice pipes and pipe components (i.e. cone pieces) in shops or stalls.

Three months’ notice was provided to ensure businesses had adequate time to cease sale of the items and remove them from display.

Superintendent Scott Pollock from the Organised Crime Division said NT Police are supportive of the amendments.

“We know how harmful illicit drugs are to the community, causing all manner of pain and suffering, and associated crime. Anything that can help reduce the use, sale and prevalence of drugs in our community is a positive,” he said.

“This is another step in the right direction and we are glad to see the introduction of supportive measures that are aimed at changing people’s attitudes and behaviours in relation to the misuse of illicit drugs.” From today, police will be visiting outlets throughout the Northern Territory who had previously sold drug paraphernalia to ensure compliance with the new laws.

The maximum penalty for the display or supply of a cocaine kit or water pipe is 100 penalty units (currently $15,400) or imprisonment for 12 months.

The maximum penalty for the display or supply of an ice pipe is 200 penalty units (currently $30,800) or imprisonment for two years.
