Firearm licence changes

Police

With the recent changes to the Firearms Act allowing for licencing up to ten years, police are reminding all firearm owners they must present all registered firearms for inspection when making an application to renew your licence.

Sergeant Amee Meredith from the Firearms Policy and Records Unit said licence holders should ensure the firearms are not brought into a police station loaded.

“Carrying a loaded firearm into a police station is taken seriously and failure to adhere to this basic safety principle may result in prosecution and/or the cancellation of your licence.

“Firearms should also be in a carry case, not openly carried,” Sergeant Meredith said.

If you have a large number of firearms, arrangements can be made for the police to attend your storage location for inspection.
