Newest recruits graduate

Police

Another 39 sworn officers have been welcomed into the Northern Territory Police Force.

Recruit Constable Squad 129 and Aboriginal Community Police Officer Squad 23 graduated this afternoon at a ceremony at Marrara Stadium.

Commissioner of Police Reece Kershaw said today’s graduation was extra special.

“Squad 129 is the most diverse squad we have ever had. Of the 30 members, 43% are women and 17% identify as indigenous,” he said.

The squad is also the first to be trained in saliva drug testing as part of standard training.

The recruits will be posted to Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Darwin.

“Aboriginal Community Police Officers are a cornerstone of our organisation and I am delighted to welcome nine new ACPOs today,” Mr Kershaw said.

“ACPOs are a vital part of our jobs in urban, regional and remote areas. They are role models for the younger members of their communities. They provide leadership and guidance on cultural matters and help keep the lines of communication open.”

The ACPOs will be posted in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine and Alyangula.
