Police

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service members wish to remind Territorians to check electronics when leaving their homes.

Fire crews were called to a home in Bayview Street, Fannie Bay shortly after 10am. On arrival, the top floor of the home was completely engulfed in flames and was eventually destroyed.

Watch Commander Senior Station Officer Nick Bell said the cause of the fire appeared to be an iron that had been left on.

“This serves as a timely reminder to check electrical appliances including irons and hair straighteners before leaving the house,” he said.

“The single male occupant in the granny flat escaped uninjured. A 4m pet saltwater crocodile housed in a pen in the back yard was also unharmed in the blaze.”

Residents are also reminded to check smoke alarms are working and replace batteries every year.
