Meanwhile in Alice Springs, a 25-year-old male was charged with a range of traffic offences – including drink driving, reckless driving, unlicensed, unregistered, uninsured, unroadworthy, hooning – after he was allegedly caught performing burnouts around the town.

The black Holden Commodore was spotted several times throughout the night, and sped away from police.

The driver was eventually apprehended after the vehicle broke down on Newland Street.

He will appear in Alice Springs Local Court today.

Senior Sergeant Serge Bouma said police were sick of reckless behaviour.

“These idiots have no business being behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. They have clearly shown they do not care about the safety and wellbeing of other road users. This sort of behaviour infuriates me and it should infuriate everyone.”

“Drink driving is not acceptable in any circumstance – it needs to stop. Enough’s enough.

“If you’re going out and you are planning to drink, please leave the car at home and organise a safe way home before you start drinking.”
