Northern Territory Police are warning job-hunters to be wary of illegitimate job offers advertised online.
The jobs – while appearing authentic – are in fact recruiting people to distribute stolen property or cash.
Senior Constable Jason Corbett of the High Tech Crime Squad said a Darwin resident was recently caught up in the scam.
“On this occasion the resident was contracted to collect high-end electronics and to on-sell them online.
“The proceeds of these local sales were transferred offshore, potentially funding international crime syndicates.”
“People taking up these job are not only aiding criminal activity, they’re also exposing themselves to potential prosecution for receiving stolen property and money laundering.
“Remember – if a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
Anyone aware of similar activities is encouraged to report it through the Australian cybercrime website www.acorn.gov.au or by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
