UPDATE: Daly River - Flood Watch

Police

Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) predictions have been revised and now suggest that the potential for waters to rise in the Daly River community will now occur later - and with less severity - than previously expected.

"The Daly River Emergency Plan is still active and the community continues to prepare for a flood event" Northern Region Emergency Controller, Assistant Commissioner Matthew Hollamby said.

"In light of the revised BoM predictions, plans for an evacuation today have been suspended.

"Northern Region Emergency Committee teams remain on stand-by for a possible evacuation and preparations are still underway at Foskey Pavillion in Darwin.

"Daly River residents are urged to remain vigilant; to continue to make preparations for a possible evacuation in coming days; and to keep up-to-date with advice from the BoM and Emergency Services."

A Flood Watch is still current for the Bonaparte and North West Rivers, with heavy rainfall likely to lead to strong river rises which may lead to Flood Warnings for some rivers, including the Daly River.

Borroloola is experiencing Minor Flood levels. The Carpentaria Highway, Tablelands Highway and the Wollogorang Road (to the QLD border) are all closed.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises:

  • Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
  • Prepare for flooding and move away while safe to do so
  • Don't drive into floodwaters
