UPDATE #3 – Daly River – Flood Warning

Police

A moderate flood warning is current for the Daly River.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) advises that moderate flooding is expected along the Lower Daly River. The Daly River Police Station is expected to reach the moderate flood level on Monday morning. The river level is likely to peak on Tuesday afternoon.

“The Northern Region Emergency Committee met today to discuss the situation in Daly River,” Northern Region Emergency Controller, Assistant Commissioner Matthew Hollamby said.

“Teams remain on stand-by, however at this stage there is no need for the evacuation of the Daly River community.”

Communications issues are continuing to affect fixed line, ADSL and mobiles in the Daly River region. Telstra is working to restore impacted services as quickly as possible and is sending technicians to the Daly River Region.

“We understand that a number of households in Daly River disposed of food as advised, ahead of the planned evacuation last Friday,” Northern Region Controller Hollamby said.

“In light of this, the continuing threat of evacuation, and ongoing Telstra outages, the Northern Region Emergency Committee will be allocating an immediate relief payment – via a one-off local store credit of $250 for each household in the Daly River community.

“The credits will be available when the local store opens tomorrow morning. A community BBQ was also held today in Daly River.”

Northern Territory Emergency Service Regional Manager, Mark Cunnington, also urged residents in the Darwin and Rural Areas to prepare for possible localised flooding in coming days, in view of expected heavy rainfall.

“Households should be aware of their local situation, and prepare and plan for the eventuality of flooding,” Mr Cunnington said.

“Road conditions can change very quickly. We recommend drivers adhere to the turn around, don’t drown message and do not enter flooded roads.”

A number of roads are closed across the Territory due to floodwaters. Please check Road Report http://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/roadreport/ for the most up-to-date advice regarding road conditions before setting out.

Schools in the North Western Top End region will be open as scheduled on Monday 29 January 2018 for teachers, and Tuesday 30 January 2018 for students. The Department of Education will continue to closely monitor the weather and road conditions in the region and provide further updates on the status of the affected schools.
