Tropical Cyclone Marcus – Clean up – Update #11

Police

Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services are asking people to stay at home this weekend as the clean-up from Tropical Cyclone Marcus continues.

Thousands of trees are down across the Greater Darwin region and Power and Water Corporation is still working to restore services.

“We’re trying to respond to the calls as quickly as possible and we thank people for their patience,” Regional Controller Warren Jackson said.

“Our NTES staff and volunteers are focusing on emergency repairs and restoring access to critical areas.

“Where people are able to make their own repairs, we’d urge them to do so, or to report damage to their landlord, real estate agent or insurer.

“NTES is continuing to respond to calls, but in some circumstances we will have limited ability to help, particularly for incidents involving large trees.”

Anyone requiring Emergency Service assistance should call 132 500, or 000 in a life-threatening situation.

A boil water alert is still in place for the region and the Department of Health is translating the warning into other languages to increase community awareness.

Power is also yet to be restored across the Greater Darwin area, with around 25,800 of about 60,000 properties without electricity.

“We’re still assessing and making safe downed power lines across the region,” Regional Controller Jackson said.

“There are also a number of traffic lights out across the area and debris is still being cleared from roads.

“If you don’t need to travel urgently, keep off the roads and stay at home.

“We’re thankful no-one has been injured yet, including those who ignored our messages to take shelter during TC Marcus and people who continue to drive around unnecessarily.”

Assessments are still being made about what public transport and which schools will be operating tomorrow.

Updates will be provided by SecureNT as they become available, including about power outages and the boil water alert. People are advised to check social media or the website: https://securent.nt.gov.au/

There are no more Warning or Watch zones for TC Marcus in the Northern Territory.
