Police are investigating a number of reports of rock throwing in which multiple vehicles were damaged in Alice Springs overnight.

Initial reports indicate at least five motorists were hit by people throwing rocks along the North Stuart Highway near Anzac Hill, Beaurepairs and the Indervon Service Station between 9:30pm and 1am.

A number of vehicles were damaged, and in one instance it is alleged a rock narrowly missed the face of a passenger and struck the shoulder of the driver.

Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy who will be charged with one count of Recklessly Endangering Serious Harm, and will appear before the Alice Springs Youth Justice Court at a later date.

Acting Superintendent Pauline Vicary said this is the second youth Police have apprehended in the past two days as a result of additional resources in the areas.

“These are dangerous acts that can and have caused serious harm. We will not tolerate the risk rock throwing poses upon others.

“Police continue to work with other Government agencies including Territory Families Youth Outreach Officers and other Youth Services in an attempted to divert those people who are causing these problems.

“It is encouraging people are reporting to police when they witness these events. The actions of the victims following last nights’ incidents assisted police in identifying and arresting one person and identifying two others who will follow up.

“I cannot stress enough to those who may fall victim to these acts to please make a statement to police so we can fully investigate and make these people accountable for their actions.”
