Northern Territory Police have praised the efforts of the Galiwinku community following a report of an unlawful entry at a health centre in the region on Monday, 7 April.

It’s alleged a group of youths entered the premises at around 3:00pm and caused extensive damage inside the building.

Police observed needles - some contaminated - and other medical supplies strewn around the interior and exterior of the building. Important medical equipment was also interfered with which has resulted in the temporary cessation services at the centre. A vehicle at the location also received substantial damage when it was pelted with rocks.

The estimated cost of damage is believed to be approximately $200,000.

As officers were investigating the incident, community members located 11 youths believed to have information about the offending. The youths and their parents are assisting police with their enquiries.

Superintendent Drew Slape said “This type of meaningless destruction has a significant impact on the community and the services that can be delivered for community members,”

“Police would like to thank members of the Galiwinku Community for their assistance,” he said.

“Whilst it’s disappointing to see this type of offending take place, we’re encouraged that locals have made it clear that sort of behaviours won’t be tolerated.”

Police are working closely with the community to address the youth problems.

Investigations are continuing.
