Darwin RSL fire

Police

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service are continuing their investigation into the fire which destroyed the Darwin RSL on Sunday morning.

Yesterday, a crew of SES volunteers assisted firefighters in clearing debris, enabling fire crews to access the site today.

“SES were fantastic in the support that they provided us,” said Station Officer and Fire Investigator Tony Miles.

They worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon to assist us in removing some of the debris to get us into the areas that we wanted to have a closer look at today.”

NTFRS crews were inside the building this morning assessing the impact of the fire.

“We’ve got a long way to go in the investigation yet. We’re hoping the on-site stuff will be finished today,” SO Miles said.

We haven’t determined whether or not it’s suspicious. All our avenues of investigation are open.”

SO Miles also praised the efforts of fire crews for protecting the surrounding buildings and businesses, some of which were lucky to have sustained minimal damage.

“Fire crews on Sunday morning did a fantastic job protecting all the assets around the RSL club. The crews worked tirelessly throughout the night and did a magnificent job protecting buildings on both sides.”

NT Fire and Rescue Service is appealing to anyone who has footage of the fire to contact them. It is hoped any kind of footage may assist with the investigation.
