Territory Day 2018

Police

Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services wish all Territorians and visitors a safe and happy Territory Day tomorrow.

The Territory is the only place where, for one day a year, the public can purchase and set off fireworks.

People celebrating with their own fireworks are able to let them off between 6pm and 11pm on Sunday 1 July. It is recommended that you only buy enough fireworks that you can safely use during this time. They will be available for purchase between 9am and 9pm.

In 2017, police received 107 calls, up from 93 in 2016, while the NT Fire and Rescue Service answered 416 calls, triple the number received the previous year.

Fines have increased to $1550 for the possession and use of fireworks outside the approved period and for throwing, igniting or exploding a firework in a way likely to damage property or injure a person or animal.

Anyone found lighting and fireworks after Sunday 1 July will be infringed.

A/Executive Director Mark Spain said: “responsible adults have an obligation to properly supervise children at all times and set a positive example in the safe usage of fireworks”.

“The welfare of family pets should also not be overlooked,” he said.

“Fireworks should be set up and lit as per the instructions on the product purchased from the supplier to ensure they won’t fall over, and used in a cleared area away from trees and buildings.

“As an extra precaution, a hose connected to a tap and/or buckets of water should be placed nearby, and all spent fireworks must be handled and disposed of carefully by adults only.”

The approved period to possess fireworks has been extended by 24 hours from 12pm on Monday 2 July until 12pm on Tuesday 3 July 2018, to allow the public more time to hand in their unused fireworks. Do not keep fireworks because they can deteriorate with age and become unsafe.

For information on disposing of unused fireworks, call NT WorkSafe on 1800 019 115.
