Northern Territory Police are investigating a report of a child being assaulted in Tennant Creek yesterday afternoon.

Detectives from Tennant Creek and Alice Springs are investigating to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

A person of interest has been identified and is assisting Police with their inquiries.

The child is safe, and in the care of family at this time.
