Charges - Non-consensual sharing of intimate image - Palmerston

Police

A 41-year-old male has been charged with threatening to distribute an intimate image.

It is alleged that the man threatened his ex-partner with publishing the image on social media without consent. He was subsequently arrested and is scheduled to appear before Darwin Local Court on Friday 28 September 2018.

Under new legislation, the maximum penalty for non-consensual sharing of intimate images is three years’ imprisonment.

“The male didn’t think he would get in trouble because he hadn’t actually posted it,” said Acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Roomes.

“The new legislation doesn’t require it to actually be published; a threat is sufficient and Northern Territory Police take this sort of threat seriously.”
