Arrests - Assault Police - Galiwinku

Police

Galiwinku Police have arrested two males following alleged assaults on police this morning.

Around 10:00am police attended to an incident in Galiwinku. As police were arresting a 23-year-old male he allegedly assaulted a female officer by repeatedly punching her to the face. A male officer was also allegedly attacked by an 18-year-old male when he went to intervene.

Both of the alleged offenders were eventually subdued and taken into custody where they are awaiting charges.

Both officers received injuries which required treatment.

Assistant Commissioner Narelle Beer said that any assault on our police members is completely unacceptable.

“Police are committed to keeping the community safe but they should be able to go home safely to their loved ones after every shift,”

“To hear that one of our members was repeatedly punched in the face is deplorable and shocking” she said.

Senior Sergeant Daniel Whitfield-Jones, Officer in Charge of Nhulunbuy Police, said it is appalling that the two officers were attacked when they were simply doing their job.

“Police are there to protect the community. Any assault against an officer will not be tolerated,” he said.

The 23-year-old is expected to be charged with assault police and other unrelated offences while the 18-year-old is expected to be charged with assault police.

Officers from Nhulunbuy have been deployed to Galiwinku to assist the injured officers.
