A 35-year-old male has died as a result of a single vehicle crash near Pine Creek, approximately 500 metres south of the Kakadu Highway turn-off.
Police were notified around four o’clock yesterday afternoon by a passer-by that a vehicle had rolled on the Stuart Highway. Upon arrival by police from Katherine, the male driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was located trapped in the driver’s seat with significant injuries.
First aid was provided at the scene by local clinic staff and others before the male was transported to the health clinic at Pine Creek. He was declared deceased at about 5:30pm.
The Major Crash Investigation Unit has travelled to Pine Creek to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Initial enquiries indicated that speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors.
The Stuart Highway in this area was closed this morning while Major Crash investigated and was reopened around 11:30am. Motorists were able to continue travelling via a detour through the town of Pine Creek.
Police would like anyone who may have witnessed the Toyota Hilux with registration 730701 travelling on the highway around four o’clock, prior to the crash, to contact them if they have information that might help with the investigation.
