A Northern Territory Police Force officer has discharged a firearm while responding to an armed person and stolen motor vehicle incident in Palmerston earlier today.
Around 11:20am, police received multiple reports of a man allegedly armed with a blunt weapon attempting to break into houses in Firefly Court, Bakewell.
It is alleged the offender had stolen a set of keys to a silver Toyota Corolla parked at a residence nearby. Attending police officers confronted the offender as he entered the vehicle and began to flee from the scene.
Police can confirm one officer drew their firearm and allegedly discharged two rounds during the incident in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued from the scene. No injuries were reported.
The stolen Corolla was subsequently located abandoned in bushland off Roystonea Avenue. A 44-year-old man was located and arrested nearby and is currently in police custody assisting with enquiries.
The entire circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.
The use of force has been declared a Serious Custody Incident and will be subject to the appropriate investigative processes with oversight from the Professional Standards Command.
