Hooning offence - Palmerston

Police

The Northern Territory Police Force has seized a motorcycle following a hooning offence in Palmerston.

Around 6:55am on Thursday, officers from Darwin Traffic and Road Policing were conducting patrols when they detected a Yamaha road motorcycle travelling at excessive speed and performing wheel stands along Roystonea Avenue, near Temple Terrace.

Police located the motorcycle at the intersection of Lambrick Avenue and Roystonea Avenue where they observed the rider perform a wheel stand for about 20 to 30 metres before accelerating towards the back of Bellamack.

The vehicle was detected travelling at 150 km/h in a 80 km/h zone.

Officers conducted a traffic apprehension and issued infringements to the 16-year-old rider, who holds a learner driver licence.

These included driving at a dangerous speed (exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h), failing to display L plates when required, and driving causing loss of traction.

The rider returned negative results for alcohol and drug testing.

The motorcycle was seized for 48 hours under the anti-hooning legislation.

Senior Sergeant Devrim Kanyilmaz said the rider’s behaviour posed a serious risk to the community.

“This type of riding puts the lives of everyone on the road in danger,” he said.

“We understand young riders can make poor decisions, but in this case the behaviour has been ongoing and becoming increasingly dangerous. At these speeds, there is absolutely no margin for error.

“We’re urging all riders, especially learners, to make safe decisions and help keep our roads safe for everyone”.

Northern Territory Police remind all road users that dangerous riding behaviours place not only the rider, but the whole community at risk.

Territory Road Policing members will continue to target high‑risk behaviours to keep Territory roads safe.
