The Northern Territory Police Force is investigating a fatal crash involving two vehicles that occurred near Yirrkala Community earlier this morning.
Around 6.45am, police received a report of an unlawful entry at a residence in Nhulunbuy, with a grey Toyota Corolla reported stolen.
Around 7.15am, the stolen motor vehicle was reported to be driving dangerously in the vicinity of Yirrkala Community. A short time later, the vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Prado on Gunyipinya Road.
Police and other emergency services responded with four people confirmed deceased at the scene, three from the stolen motor vehicle and one from the Prado. A second occupant of the Prado suffered minor injuries.
A crime scene has been established, and the Major Crash Investigation Unit are travelling to the scene to investigate. The Gunyipinya Road is expected to be closed for an extended period of time.
Anyone who witnessed the grey Toyota Corolla driving dangerously in the area is urged to contact police on 131 444.
Formal identification of the victims is yet to occur, and the Northern Territory Police Force will provide an update when more information becomes available.
