Arrest – Siege – Alice Springs

Police

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested a 26-year-old man in relation to a siege that occurred in Alice Springs yesterday.

At around 12pm, the Alice Springs Criminal Investigations Branch received intelligence that a 26-year-old male with an outstanding arrest warrant for domestic violence offences was at the Alice Springs Hospital.

Police attempted to apprehend the vehicle he was using as he exited the hospital, but the offender failed to stop, prompting a pursuit. The pursuit was terminated a short time later on South Terrace for safety reasons.

The 26-year-old then drove to a residence, where he was located inside the premises allegedly armed with edged weapons.

Police subsequently withdrew and a cordon was established outside the residence.

He retreated into the house and periodically engaged with police through the front screen door. On one occasion, he allegedly produced a jerry can of fuel and threatened to set the house on fire.

Negotiators were on scene and additional resources were deployed.

Around 5pm, the offender surrendered and was arrested without further incident.

The offender remains in police custody with charges expected to follow.
