An apology to Aboriginal Territorians

I, Michael Murphy, Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police am deeply sorry to all Aboriginal Territorians, for the past harms and injustices caused by members of the Northern Territory Police.

I formally apologise for the hurt inflicted upon Aboriginal people, and together with my fellow officers, I commit the NT Police service to do the hard work to transform our relationship with Aboriginal Territorians for a safer community for all.

We know that we cannot change or undo the past, but together we can commit to not repeating our mistakes and the injustices.

Structure Fire – Alice Springs

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service and Northern Territory Police have responded to a structure fire in the early hours of this morning in Alice Springs.

Around 4.15am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report of a structure fire at a residential premises on Gosse Street in East Side.

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) attended and extinguished the fire. The premises sustained substantial damaged as a result of the fire.

Police can confirm no persons were inside the structure at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported. The residence is believed to have been abandoned, and at this stage the fire is not believed to be linked to an aggravated robbery that occurred on Gosse Street on the weekend.

NT Police and NTFRS are investigating the cause of the fire which is currently unknown.
