The Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) has released the latest seasonal bushfire outlook for 2024.
Thankfully, the seasonal outlook for June to August 2024 shows no increased risk of fire across Australia. However, there is still an increased likelihood of unusually high maximum temperatures.
The Top End Fire Danger Period is expected to commence in July and The Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service is continuing to urge all Territory residents to stay vigilant and to be prepared.
Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Stephen Hunter said “ We are urging everyone against complacency when it comes to fire safety.
“Right now is still a fantastic time for all landowners to complete mitigations works and to ensure your bushfire survival plan is up to date.
“Proper firebreaks remain one the best ways to protect yourself and your community. Always ensure they are at least 4 meters wide and any vegetation within is below 50mm.
Residents are reminded that NTFRS, Bushfires NT and local contractors will also be conducting extensive fuel reduction burning over the next month across the Top End.
There is a possibility that these controlled burns may impact surrounding areas with smoke and falling ash. As such it is recommended that residents:
- Close windows and bring any washing in.
- Anticipate smoky conditions for the duration of the burns.
- When driving pay attention and if the roads are smoke affected, turn on your lights and drive carefully.
