I, Michael Murphy, Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police am deeply sorry to all Aboriginal Territorians, for the past harms and injustices caused by members of the Northern Territory Police.

I formally apologise for the hurt inflicted upon Aboriginal people, and together with my fellow officers, I commit the NT Police service to do the hard work to transform our relationship with Aboriginal Territorians for a safer community for all.

We know that we cannot change or undo the past, but together we can commit to not repeating our mistakes and the injustices.

Search and Rescue – Tiwi Islands

Police

Northern Territory Police Search and Rescue Section (SRS) deployed to the Tiwi Islands yesterday in response to reports of a missing 45-year-old man.

Initial reports indicated that the man had gone hunting with family on Monday afternoon before becoming separated west of Wurrumiyanga Community.

Search taskings were carried out from the air via Police Airwing and a helicopter which supported ground search teams made up of local police resources and community members.

About 3pm police located the man via helicopter in scrub land 5km west of Wurrumiyanga community in a dehydrated state. The man was swiftly recovered back to the local clinic for treatment and further medical assessment.

The SRS commend the efforts of local police and thank local community members for their assistance with the operation.

The Search Coordinator, Senior Constable Michael Bishop said, “ This incident serves as a timely reminder to carry sufficient provisions for the conditions this time of year and to always have a way to tell someone where you are."
