Hooning offences - Darwin

Police

Northern Territory Police Darwin Traffic Operations seized two motorbikes under anti-hooning legislation last Wednesday evening.

Around 7:05pm, police were conducting traffic enforcement duties in an unmarked vehicle when they observed two motorcycles riding together along the Stuart Highway in the Virginia area.

The motorcycles were weaving in and out of traffic at speed with police detecting the top speed of the motorcycles at 197km in a posted 100km zone.

A short time later, the motorcycles were stopped outside of Coolalinga, where it was noted one of the riders also had a pillion passenger.

Both riders were issued with Notices to Appears in Darwin Local Court at a later date for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km and riding at a speed dangerous to the public.

Both motorcycles were impounded under anti-hooning legislation for 48 hours.

Acting Senior Sergeant Devrim Kanyilmaz said, “This is an incredibly selfish and disappointing act by these individuals.

“They showed a blatant disregard for their own safety and the safety of other road users.

“Had something gone wrong at that speed, the result would have been disastrous.

“With the lives lost on roads currently standing at 50, this could easily have been three more, not to mention the incredible impact on our emergency services.

“This is a timely reminder that police are out and will detect and prosecute dangerous drivers, anywhere, anytime.”
