Charges – Illicit substances - East Arnhem community

Northern Territory Police have arrested three offenders and seized a large quantity of illicit substances in the remote East Arnhem community of Gapuwiyak.

On Friday, one male and two females were located within a residence of Gapuwiyak Community with a commercial quantity of Kava, a substantial amount of cash, and counterfeit money.

The Kava was prepared and packaged into smaller quantities, believed to be in preparation for the quick distribution in remote communities.

The three offenders were arrested and have been charged with the following Offences:

  • Supply Kava Commercial Quantity
  • Supply Schedule 2 Substance – Indigenous Community
  • Possess counterfeit currency

Sergeant Muchow of Gapuwiyak Police said, “This result is a great example of how collaborative work between local police and community were able to identify the alleged offending and act swiftly with the successful apprehension and prosecution of the alleged offenders.

“As frontline workers we are well aware of the devastating impact illicit substances have on the lives of people in vulnerable communities.

“Officers will continue to target those who seek to gain benefit from the distribution of illicit substances in our remote communities and ensure that offenders are held fully accountable for their actions.”
