Arrest – Assault police officer – Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 26-year-old man after he allegedly ran over a police officer at a takeaway liquor outlet in Alice Springs.

About 3.15 pm on Friday, 5 July a Police officer performing Point Of Sale Inspector (POSI) duties at an outlet in the north of the town was struck by a vehicle.

The officer had been notified of a potential drink-driver parked out the front of the liquor outlet when he went outside and attempted to detain the male driver, who had started to reverse out of the carpark.

When attempting to reach inside the vehicle in an attempt to remove the keys the member has been struck by the vehicle as it reversed.

He was knocked to the ground with the vehicle running over his foot.

Soon after the driver got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene before being located and arrested and taken back to Alice Spring Watch House.

The officer was conveyed to Alice Spring Hospital for treatment of a suspected broken finger and broken right foot.

The offender provided a positive alcohol sample returning a reading of .187.
