Northern Territory Police have seized and destroyed 13 litres of homemade alcohol in Mutitjulu last week.

On Friday 14 June, police conducted a search of a residence in Mutitjulu after receiving reports of homemade alcohol being sold and distributed from the location.

As a result of the search, police discovered 13 litres of homemade wine brewing in a container. The wine was allegedly being sold for a substantial amount to members of the community.

The wine was seized and destroyed by police.

A summons to appear in court has been issued to a 26-year-old female in relation to this incident and the investigation is continuing.

Superintendent Peter Dash said, “The offender has deliberately targeted community residents in a ‘dry community’ for her commercial gain.

“This incident is particularly disgraceful as the health and safety of community residents has been jeopardised. Homemade alcohol poses significant health risks due to the unregulated production methods, and the exploitative cost at which it was being sold is disgraceful.

“We are thankful to the members of the public who reported this incident to police, allowing members to quickly act to ensure no further supply could occur.

“The devastating impacts of alcohol related harm is well known, and police will continue to target those who attempt to distribute alcohol into our remote communities.”
