Permits to burn open – Southern Region

Fire and Rescue

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service are reminding rural land owners that permits to burn are now open.

Strict conditions relate to permits to burn and infringements will be issued for non-compliant burns.

  • Garden green waste only, no building or household waste allowed
  • Burn piles to be no larger than 5m x 5m and have cleared 4 metre wide fire breaks on all sides
  • Property must comply with the Fire and Emergency Regulations 1996
  • Permitted burn must be monitored by a competent person over the age of 18 at all times until extinguished
  • Neighbours must be notified at least 48 hours before commencing a permit to burn and the Joint Emergency Services Communications Centre notified prior to ignition and at completion of burn
  • Landholder should have sufficient resources to extinguish the fire if required

The NTFRS encourage all landholders to consider alternatives to burning wherever possible.

Residents south of Heavitree Gap within the Alice Springs Emergency Response Area can apply by contacting the Alice Springs Fire Station on 8951 6688 or the Alice Springs Rural Volunteer Fire Brigade on 0417775523.

District Officer Stephen Hunter said “We are also urging all landowners to ensure that they have the appropriate firebreaks in place.

“Firebreaks are one the best ways to protect yourself and your community. Ensure they are at least 4 meters wide and any vegetation within is below 50mm. We all need to do our part when it comes to fire safety in the Territory.”
