Police

Northern Territory Police have arrested four people in relation to assaults against police in Alice Springs and Darwin on Saturday.

At 8:40pm, reports were received of a group of men fighting at an Alice Springs shopping centre on Bath Street. Upon arrival, police apprehended a 42-year-old man who allegedly assaulted two responding members during the arrest.

Up to 5 offenders have thrown rocks at attending members, with OC spray being deployed to disperse the group. Two females were arrested and have since been charged for the incident.

One of the police officers attended hospital with minor injuries sustained from the assault.

In a separate incident in Darwin, a police officer was allegedly spat on and another physically assaulted whilst responding to a disturbance at East Point.

Assistant Commissioner Martin Dole said “Our officers put their safety and lives on the line everyday protecting Territorians. This sort of behaviour is completely disgusting, unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“Police urge anyone who witnesses anti-social or criminal behaviour to contact 131 444 and in the case of an emergency to call 000.”
