Northern Territory Police have safely arrested a man after the 44-year-old barricaded himself in a residence in Virginia overnight after a domestic violence incident.

Around 1pm yesterday, the man allegedly threatened a former partner with a firearm at an address in Stuart Park. The man then fled the scene in a vehicle. 

The Territory Response Group, Dog Operations, negotiators and general duties were deployed to track and apprehend the offender.

The man was located at his residence on Virginia Road and a cordon established. Negotiations continued until 2am with police developing an action plan to breach the building.

A short time later, OC Spray was deployed into the residence and the offender was arrested without incident. A crime scene remains active at the location and the firearm allegedly used in the domestic violence incident is yet to be located.

The man remains in custody and is currently undergoing a medical assessment. 

Acting Assistant Commissioner Sachin Sharma said “I would like to commend the police members involved in this incident whose lengthy negotiations resulted in a safe arrest after what was a high risk situation.
